四、 阅读理解(20小题,每小题2分,共40分)

(A)

阅读下面四篇语言材料,然后按要求做题。

I recently lost my pet pig, Arnold, because of a traffic accident. Arnold was an 8⁃month⁃old pig that taught me so much about love and friendship. My heart broke because of his death.

Arnold didn't know he was a pig, and he thought he was just another member of our family. He modeled his behavior through watching me, my wife, my two daughters and our dogs. He was sure he was loved by all, and really he was. He learned his name, how to sit and how to use his food bowl when he was just 7 weeks old!

He loved to sleep on my legs as I sat on the couch watching TV. He didn't care if he grew to weigh 45 pounds. He expected me to hold him onto my legs at 8:00 every evening. He would fall fast asleep within seconds after snuggling(偎依) his wet nose between my neck and shoulder.

Arnold helped me a lot in the country. Just by being there at my feet and interested in what I was doing, he made a most boring job of mine enjoyable. When he was out walking and I called his name, he would come running at the top speed to me. Just as I was angry with some difficult work, Arnold would show up, with his wet nose in my ear. Arnold would honk, seeming to say,“Take a break and laugh with me for a while. That should make it all better.” And it did, every time.

My wife and two daughters began to say that Arnold and I were so close that he had become the son that I never had in our family. The neighborhood kids used to visit Arnold and couldn't wait to play with him.

I'll never forget Arnold.

Snake dishes have become popular in recent years. Snake meat is often seen in restaurants. It seems that eating snake is now in fashion, and if you haven't eaten snake yet, you're “out of date”.

But I wonder whether all of the trends(趋势) are worth following. Some people may think that eating snake is good for their health. But these people don't find out that mice and worms are often in snakes' bodies, and there are also many parasites(寄生虫) found inside snakes. They may be bad for our health.

Apart from this, we're sorry to see that more snakes are being killed by a butcher's knife. According to the English newspaper, Shanghai Star, about 1,000 tons of snakes are eaten every year in China. In Shenzhen of Guangdong Province, sometimes as many as 10 tons of snakes are served on dinner table in a single day.

If we still turn a blind eye to this, a vicious circle(恶性循环) will happen. If more snakes are eaten by people, the number of snakes will drop, but the number of mice will increase, which will result in a decrease of crop output.

This will make more people hungry. Who wants to see such a tragedy happen? Therefore, let's not eat snakes any more. To protect snakes is to protect ourselves.

A. 10 B. 3,650 C. 1,000 D. 100

65. Why does the writer say that to protect snakes is to protect ourselves?

A. Because snake meat is good for our health.

B. Because snake skin can be used to make many beautiful shoes, bags and clothes.

C. Because eating snake is now in fashion.

D. Because a drop in the number of snakes will result in a decrease of crop output.

No one can change the weather. 71. But if we read carefully the signs(迹象) around us,we can tell what changes in the weather will be.

72. That means what the wearther will be like in the following days. For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feeling pain in their bones(骨头) tells us the coming of wet wearther. 73. But they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. That is probably because the insects(昆虫) fly low, so the birds fly low to eat them. 74, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle(闪烁) clearly at night, then fine weather will go on. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. 75, then the following day will be fine.
