After spending 589 days picking uplitter or rubbish at one of Los AngelesCounty's most popular hiking spots,20?year?old Edgar McGregor says the parkis clean of waste.

McGregor's journey was sparked byan Olympic dream. When he learned LosAngeles would host the 2028 SummerGames, he worried that its national forestwith litter everywhere would become a“global embarrassment” and took it uponhimself to start cleaning.

McGregor decided to start with EatonCanyon, the closest of the Los Angeles NationalForest Parks to where he lives. Atthe beginning, he thought that cleaning thepark would take 10 to 20 days. However, ittook 589 days.

On his largest solo cleanup day, Mc?Gregor spent 300 minutes clearing an arealess than one acre in size. He filled a previouslyempty dumpster (垃圾箱) with morethan 1000 pounds of trash. He venturedout in extreme weather, including during the states record heat wave in September, after a January snowstorm, and even whilethe other side of the park was actively onfire!

After months of park cleanliness, Mc?Gregor noticed several weeks ago that hewas running out of locations to clean—even the spots that were usually reliablesources of litter were mostly empty. “Notworrying about litterbugs and simply immersingmyself in this work has made memore excited than ever to go out everysingle day and pick up,” McGregor said.“There is nothing more satisfying thanseeing brand new animals return to yourpark after months of cleaning up. I highlyencourage anyone with any spare time togive this mission a shot. Your parks needyou.”
