A couple in their 60s has traveled 12,000 miles across 16 countries from Britain to China—riding their bikes the entire way. Grandparents Peter and Chris stepped on the long journey after deciding to “do something a bit different”. They traveled across cities, deserts, mountains and everything in between across Europe, the Middle East and the East Asia. The married couple of 37 years enjoyed themselves with delicious local food and spent most nights inside a tiny tent put up wherever they could find shelter.

Peter, 66, said the moment they finally had a look at the famous Great Wall after a year and a half of cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”. At the end of their journey, the special pair didnt fly home but instead chose to book a cabin inside a 400m-long container ship. The final part was a three-week voyage from Singapore across the Indian Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea before arriving at Southampton.

“You never know what the day is going to bring. All you know is that you are going to get on your bike and cycle. Every day is an adventure and every day is new. Overall, the experience is absolutely unbelievable,” Peter said.

Peter and Chris initially set out to cycle from Britain in January 2017 but were forced home. They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles and broke his leg. After several months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018.

Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink. Chris, 64, said, “It was a wonderful experience, particularly wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.”

24. What is the couples purpose of taking the long journey?

It may seem like a moment in a science fiction movie. In a fierce battle, a creature loses an arm but, then, grows another one to take its place.

However, this is not science fiction. It is scientific fact. Some fish and amphibians, such as salamanders, can regrow lost limbs and organs.

As mammals (哺乳動物) evolved they lost the ability to regrow, or regenerate, parts of their body. However, experiments show that it may be possible to regain that ability.

Tropical freshwater zebrafish are popular pets. They are also popular as lab animals. Their embryos (胚胎) are clear, or translucent. They can regrow damaged fins, skin and hearts. Zebrafish are also genetically similar to humans.

In 2013, the website Sci-News reported that researchers had found that 70 percent of “protein-coding human genes” are related to genes found in the zebrafish. The report also said that researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Britain also found that 84 percent of genes known to be connected to human diseases have a zebrafish counterpart.

Scientist Wang Yadong is one of the Pittsburg researchers. He and his team are studying the ability of zebrafish to regenerate limbs and organs. Wang says you can cut away about 20 percent of the zebrafish heart and it will regenerate. He adds that the same process may be able to help humans.

Scientists injected an “extracellular matrix”, or ECM, from the heart of a zebrafish into a severely damaged mouse heart. They found that the heart muscle regrew in days. They found something else. The healing (痊愈) was even faster when the ECM was taken from zebrafish that was itself in the process of regrowing damaged tissue.

28. What is the main reason that the zebrafish were chosen as lab animals?

A. Theyre mammals.

B. Theyre popular pets.

C. Theyre genetically similar to humans.

D. Theyre easy to find for the researchers.

29. What does the underlined word “counterpart” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. A similar thing. B. A different fish.

C. A human being. D. A little mouse.

30. What is the result of injecting ECM from a zebrafish into the damaged mouse heart?

A. The zebrafish died quickly.

B. The mouse heart regrew in days.

C. The zebrafish heart regrew quickly.

D. The mouse healed more slowly than normal.

31. Where is the text most probably taken from?

A. A science fiction. B. A guide book.

C. A fashion magazine. D. A science report.

Koalas remind people of teddy bears. They have thick fur and large ears. Their broad, flat nose makes them look cute, similar to teddy bears. In fact koalas arent cute. They have sharp (鋒利的) teeth and very sharp claws! Koalas are marsupials. This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, similar to a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mothers pocket for the first six months of its life.

The name “koala” comes from a native Australian word that means “no drink”. The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus (桉树) leaves they eat. Thats where they get their food too. Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves, and only the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live. Its also where they sleep. Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!

Why do they sleep so much? Some people think its because theyre lazy. But koalas arent lazy. They sleep so much because there isnt much nutrition in eucalyptus leaves. Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot.

After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time. Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koala to leave by “barking” at it. Koalas do “talk” to each other. Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting sound. The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get frightened they may scream (尖叫) like a baby.

32. According to the text, both koalas and kangaroos ___ .

A. have thick fur

C. eat eucalyptus leaves

D. carry their young in a pocket

33. The word “koala” comes from a word that means “___”.

34. Why do koalas sleep a lot?
