I am connected to many people working as volunteers all over the world, even after COVID-19 broke out.

Twelve days ago, I was contacted by someone I know, a person from Kenya. He shared a story about his work for kindness and joy. In his sharing, I discovered his family and other families had no food because of lockdown (封鎖).

For one day I was grief-stricken for them. I mean, how could I, in North Carolina, possibly do anything to help feed a man and 50 people on the other side of the world? After a sleepless night I awoke with clarity to give money to these families. It was not a lot of money, but all that I had and I was determined to find a way to get the funds (基金) to Kenya from the US. Luckily, I succeeded in the end. My friend has been able to make the money go far buying corn, oil, fruit, and vegetables to feed 20 adults and 30 children. And now they have food.

Each day presents a new problem. Many more people in other countries in Africa have reached out to me asking for help. It is heartbreaking. I cannot help everyone with money but I am determined to help everyone I can by telling their stories through our column Global Storytellers for Kindness on our website. I asked my friend for a list of the children in his family. So now I sit with a list of 30 names, ages, and school years, wondering what on earth we can do for these children. Each night I sleep with a question and hope my dreams will give me guidance during my awake time.

Its been a hard time for rhinos (犀牛) lately. Recently the International Union for Conservation announced the western black rhinos had died out in the wild. It was last seen in western Africa in 2006. Now, those who work to protect the animals are trying to make sure that wont happen to other rhinos.

19 south-central black rhinos in South Africa were driven to an area nearly 1,000 miles away, which was said to be the gentlest and quickest way to transport the animals. They were taken to a new home that would keep them safe from hunters (獵人).

Though it is not allowed to hunt rhinos, many are still killed for their horns, which can sell for as much as $30,000 each. Most of them are used to make drugs as traditional medicines in Asian countries. Some people believe that the horns work well in treating pain, fever and even cancer. However, there is no medical evidence yet.

Black rhino population began falling rapidly in the second half of the 1900s because of poaching. In fact, some people still hunt the animals at the risk of being put into prison. And many of the places where the animals used to live were destroyed when people started building farms on the grasslands. Until the 1960s, about 65,000 black rhinos lived throughout most of Africa. Today, fewer than 5,000 are left—most of them in zoos and wildlife reserves.

So far, the south-central black rhinos have seen a rise in numbers. It is hoped that, with continued support, these rhinos can escape the unfortunate result of the western black rhinos.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in telling apart facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than formerly believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably (可靠地) convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition (識别) of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories (种类): happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

32. The discovery shows that Westerners ___ .

A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

B. consider facial expressions universally reliable

C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways

D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions

33. What were the people asked to do in the study?

A. Make a face at each other.

B. Get their faces impressive.

C. Categorize some face pictures.

D. Observe the researchers faces.

34. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to ___ .

A. study the mouth more frequently

B. examine the eyes more attentively

C. read facial expressions more correctly

D. do facial expressions translation more successfully

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. The eye as the window to the soul.

B. Cultural differences in reading emotions.

C. How to increase cross-cultural understanding.

D. Effective methods to tell apart facial expressions.
