Hi, Sharon,

This is Li Xia. I learned from your post that you want to improve your Mandarin. I am more than willing to lend a helping hand to you.

I am convinced that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. I have such a good command of Mandarin that not only was I elected the broadcaster of the radio station of our school, but I also won the second prize in the Mandarin Contest held in our city last year. When it comes to improving Mandarin, my advice is that you should listen to Mandarin every day and practice speaking it whenever possible. Just as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

By the way, I do hope you can help me improve my English writing ability, especially the proper use of vocabulary and some important grammar.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Li Xia

Dear Tom,

How are you? I wonder if you could sell some Chinese knots for me. I made them myself with red silk threads, cloth and other materials. They look really beautiful in the shape of a diamond, about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. In china, these knots stand for friendship, love and good luck. People can either give them as gifts to friends or hang them in their houses. They are only 12.99 US dollars each. If anyone wants to know more about the knots, let them write to me. Also, do let me know if you need further information. Thank you!

Yours,

The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in our country. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try to come home for the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat moon cakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditional activities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visiting our relatives or friends.

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for your letter asking about the rebuilt Oianmen Street. Here is something about it. Qianmen Street is a famous street with a history of over 600 years. Along this 800-meter street, there are more than 300 shops. As the street is in the center of Beijing, just to the south of Tiananmen Square, its very convenient to get there by bus. You may take Buses No. 17, 69 or 59. Subway Line 2 has a stop there too. Qianmen Street is a pedestrian street, but there are trolley cars to take you not only to the shops, but also to theatres and teahouses where you can experience a truly Chinese way of life. Im sure youll like it.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Jane,

Glad to hear from you and it is a pleasure to welcome you to China in July. In your letter you asked me about Chinese social customs. Now, Im more than happy to share something relevant to them to you.

To start with, we greet each other by saying “hello” instead of kissing each other to express our care. Besides, when praised, we are supposed to make modest remarks to show our good manners. Moreover, when receiving a gift, we are encouraged to accept the gift with both hands to show respect. Last but not least, when it comes to the dinner manner, we not only chat merrily but also play jokes to enliven the atmosphere.

Finally, I hope whats mentioned above would be helpful.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Peter,

Im glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.

Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as youll be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.

Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so youll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.

Try and write me in Chinese next time.

Best wishes.

Li Hua
